Dr. Ahmad Mustafa is currently a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the Information Technology University (ITU) and Director of the CIVIL Lab. He is also serving as a Research Fellow at the SDAIA Joint Research Center for AI (JRCAI) at the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Saudi Arabia.
He earned his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, USA, in 2023. His research focuses on AI and Deep Learning for computational image understanding, weakly supervised learning, computer vision, and foundation models for perception in scientific imaging domains. His work has over 330 citations and an h-index of 8. His research has featured in multiple prestigious peer-reviewed journal publications such as the IEEE TGRS (IF:8.6), IEEE Access (IF:3.6) and SEG Geophysics (IF: 3.2). He has also presented his work at numerous international conferences such as IEEE International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP) and the International Meeting for Applied Geoscience and Energy (IMAGE).
Dr. Mustafa was awarded the prestigious Google Cloud Research Award worth 5000 USD in 2026, giving his research team access to state-of-the-award computing infrastructure. He servesas reviewer for several international journals and conferences and a member of IEEE and the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG), USA. His research excellence earned him the 2023 Roger P. Webb ECE GRA Excellence Award from Georgia Tech, two IMAGE travel grants (2019, 2020), and multiple teaching honors, including the Outstanding Online Head TA Award 2022, ECE GTA Excellence Award 2022, and the ECE CREATION Award 2023.
After graduation, he joined Occidental Petroleum (Oxy) as an AI Research Scientist, where he led AI and cloud-based solutions to optimize subsurface operations in the Gulf of Mexico under Oxy’s USD 100 million Subsurface Innovation Lab (SIL) initiative. He is a member of the IEEE as well the SEG. He has delivered invited talks at Georgia Tech’s CSIP, the ML4Seismic Consortium, UET’s SPE Student Chapter, and OGTI for OGDCL, Pakistan.
